Interdisciplinary Initiatives

College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

The interdisciplinary themes described in this site identify and illustrate interdepartmental initiatives that deserve the attention of students, faculty and supporters of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

CLAS has 23 different departments with strong traditions and ties to professional disciplinary organizations and academic journals. Most of our instruction and scholarship is organized around and within this departmental structure.  It is the responsibility of the Dean's Office to recognize and celebrate the achievements of departments and the faculty and students they house.

In addition, the Dean's Office has a special obligation to encourage and support interdisciplinary initiatives that do not have obvious departmental homes.  Some of these areas are well known and well developed.  Others are promising areas of research that may be developed with the partnership of administration, faculty and students.  Some will need the creation of new structures, such as centers or institutes; others can flourish in more informal ways.

We anticipate that the list will be reviewed from time to time; some may be dropped and others added.  The scope of the areas may be adjusted.  The first set of initiatives includes many projects in the sciences. We would expect to see future projects in other areas. The review process will always involve significant faculty input.
