Requesting Funding from the CLAS Dean's Office

The Research Foundation

UConn, through the research foundation,  offers a generous program of faculty research support in the form of large and small grants, travel awards and other funding.  These programs should be the first place that faculty should turn for such support.  See:

Dean's Fund Support for Colloquia and Workshops

Faculty members, centers, departments, or institutes may request up to $2000 per year from the CLAS Dean's Fund to support visitors, colloquium speakers, or small workshops or conferences.

Priority for support will be given to programs of high quality and relatively broad interest.  Dean's Fund support is intended to provide supplemental support in cases where individual or departmental resources are not sufficient to support the activity.  Funds provided by this program may be used to pay the travel expenses of invited speakers, but not for refreshments, receptions, or meals for employees of UConn.

In most cases, this program will provide only matching funds.  Individuals or groups requesting funding should first arrange co-sponsorship from other relevant units before approaching CLAS.  In addition, individuals expecting funding from CLAS should plan to apply to the Interdisciplinary Colloquia/Seminar Program run by the VPRGE.

The college has dedicated a limited pool of funds from the CLAS Dean's Fund to support this program. There is no annual limit to the number of times that a unit may apply and receive funding for different programs.

Events that receive financial support from CLAS under this program are required to include the official college logo (where practical) and the phrase "This program is supported by the friends and alumni of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences" on all promotional materials and announcements, including electronic announcements, that publicize the event, and to supply copies of such materials to the college for use in its development efforts.

To request support, contact the relevant divisional associate dean.  Provide a description of the planned program, a budget, and a list of other sources of funding (even if they are tentative).

Matching Funds for External Grants

In regard to external grants and fellowships, except in special circumstances, matching funds will be provided only when required by the grantor or to take advantage of unique opportunities and circumstances.

Arrangements for matching funds must be made during the proposal submission process and agreement must be secured in writing (or by unambiguous email) from all contributors prior to submitting the grant.

In general the college will supply matching funds in partnership with the VPRGE and will, in most cases, expect a departmental or individual contribution towards the total.

We will not, in general, supply post-award supplements to make up for a reduction in the proposed budget by the agency and we expect PI's to rebudget to account for such situations.

We will not supply supplemental funding for contracts or other revenue generating projects with private companies, and we expect such work to be self-supporting.

To request funding, complete the Matching Funds Request Form and forward it electronically to Professor Debra Kendall, Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Education.  Feel free to contact your associate dean, Professor Kendall, or Dean Teitelbaum with questions regarding special situations.
