Award Winners
Tristan Jones wanted to attend UConn because of his love of mathematics. He had heard that the Actuarial Science Program in the Department of Mathematics in CLAS was one of the best in the Northeast. A native of Australia, Tristan is an A student and a competitive swimmer on the UConn team, setting school records and setting his sights on the Olympic trials. Athletic scholarships are not offered in swimming, but Tristan merited the Gordon Aston Actuarial Scholarship, and he has interned for CIGNA and ING.
Deanne Kopp’s unique approach to the English language won her the first Dave Sheehan ’64 Scholarship, an award established by award-winning news anchor Pat Sheehan, CLAS ’67, in memory of his brother. An honors student double-majoring in English and communication sciences, Kopp, CLAS ’07, studies various aspects of the language, ranging from literature to history to its linguistic and scientific formations. She plans to attend graduate school and eventually work as a speech therapist.
