Roger Travis
Associate Professor of Classics
Roger Travis first found a connection between modern video games and the classics when he was teaching a class in Virgil’s Aeneid. Now he is proposing a Video Games and Human Values Initiative. As the ancient bards nightly re-composed in interactive song the stories of the Trojan Wars, a video gamer re-creates a heroic story with each interactive replay of the game. This suggests a new way of looking at video gaming culture, Travis says. Video games have the same potential to teach us, he suggests, as did the ancient bards who created communities like Athens.
