In his most recent research, Lyle Scruggs has studied globalization and welfare policy reform in North America and Western Europe. In a study of "welfare generosity," Scruggs and colleagues found that the U.S. ranks at the bottom of the list of richer, more developed countries in providing unemployment benefits, social security pensions, and sick pay – programs that are commonly available as a safety net.
