Akiko NishiyamaAssociate Professor, Physiology and NeurobiologyAs a medical student in Japan, Akiko Nishiyama was fascinated to learn that once neurons are generated in development, they cannot be replaced. She went on to earn a PhD as well as her MD, studying glial cells in the brain – cells that were once described as housekeeping cells that support neurons.
