Harry A. Frank, professor of chemistry and associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, studies very colorful compounds – carotenoids – that originate in photosynthesis. They’re responsible for the red color of tomatoes and the pink of flamingoes, and they are thought to be responsible for reducing the risk of age-related macular degeneration and cataracts.
