William F. Fitzgerald

Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor of Marine Sciences

William Fitzgerald is a marine bio-geochemist and chemical oceanographer based at the Avery Point campus in the Department of Marine Sciences. He studies the cycling of mercury in the environment and the impact of human activities on the behavior of mercury in nature. As he describes it, mercury is “an extraordinarily useful metal with an insidiously complex biogeochemical cycle.” Fitzgerald has been called “the father of mercury research” for his more than 30 years of work in the field. In this podcast, he describes recent findings and the contributions of graduate students at Avery Point.
