Robert K. Colwell

Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology

Robert Colwell, a specialist in tropical biology, has studied the potential effects of global warming on plant and animal species in Costa Rica. Tropical species face a special threat. Because temperatures are so constant throughout the lowland wet tropics, as global warming brings warmer temperatures, lowland species that cannot survive in a warmer climate will have nowhere to go except to cooler, higher elevations. Because of habitat fragmentation, this may not be possible, and it may cause deterioration in the diversity of species in tropical areas.
