Peter J. Auster
Associate Research Professor of Marine Sciences
Science Director, National Undersea Research Center at UConn
Peter J. Auster is an ecologist and conservation biologist who studies fishes in the marine environment. His research centers on the distribution, diversity, and abundance of fishes, the most diverse form of invertebrate on earth. He has explored deep sea mounts, which are extinct volcanoes in the deep sea, finding deep sea coral reefs and “strange and bizarre fishes” in these habitats. Auster has worked as a scientific adviser to the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization in developing guidelines for fishing on the high seas on international waters.
